Hoof Care

THE NATURAL TRIM METHOD

The Natural Trim is a safe and humane trimming method developed by Jaime Jackson that mimics the natural wear patterns of the wild, free-roaming horses of the U.S. Great Basin. Facilitating the Natural Trim means that the hoof is not forced into any given shape, but allowed to respond to practitioner mimicking the natural wear patterns. Applying the Natural Trim to domesticated horses’ hooves creates more naturally shaped hooves that are naturally balanced. This holistic trimming method is best applied in conjunction with the proven Principles and Practices of Natural Horse Care.

The Natural Trim is the only method that has consistent trimming guidelines to which I adhere to at all times.

The Four Guiding Principles of the Natural Trim

I. Leave that which naturally should be there.

II. Remove only that which is naturally worn away in the wild.

III. Allow to grow that which should be there naturally but isn’t due to human meddling.

IV. Ignore all pathology.

Trimming in accordance to these principles means that the hoof might be trimmed selectively. Nevertheless with precision to maintain natural balance and capsule integrity.

APPOINTMENTS
What can you expect

AM and PM appointments, early evening appointments are also available.

Every new hoof care client is welcome to request a FREE pre-visit consultation to “test the waters”, and get to know me. During our first consultation, we can establish the level of care required and adjust it to your needs.

Your first visit will last anything between one and half, to two hours depending on your horse’s needs. It will include full hoof evaluation with recommendations on hoof care, nutrition, boarding and management. I will measure the hooves and check for the natural hoof balance. You will also receive a copy of the report.

Regular appointments usually last up to one hour. We will start with updating on any changes that can affect hooves since the last visit. This will include your horses boarding, their diet, and any changes in their management. Gathering information will help us to address any hoof issues more holistically. The trimming session will commence with carrying out an assessment of the hoof capsule.

After the trim I will be taking measurements and photographs to keep accurate records of the hoof work and to track any changes.

I promise to give you as much notice as possible if any problems ensure on my end. This includes any delays in getting on time to your appointment.

If you have any concerns, questions or suggestions please feel free to reach out. We can arrange a call, or you can drop me a message/email. I will do my best to provide the support and path forward.

What I am looking for

I am looking to develop long-term working relationships with my clients and build trust based trimming sessions with horses.

Consistent trimming schedule is paramount to healthy hooves free from cracks and deformity. To avoid overgrown feet I schedule for the next appointment on the day. The recommendation is between 3 – 6 weeks.

Horses that are eager and ready to be trimmed upon arrival in a safe and weather proof environment.

In preparation for the visit please ensure suitable working space is available, and the horse is prepared for the work ahead. Ideally hard standing area, especially in the wet season. Clean and dry legs and hooves. Very wet and muddy feet are likely to meet with rejection.

Horses that are reasonable with their handling and open minded owners who are open to working as a team in addressing any hoof handling issues.

Owners who are willing to reinforce any training done with horses during the appointment between the visits. Horses with any vices such as biting, snatching or kicking will only be trimmed when trimming session is combined with hoof handling/behavioural rehabilitation session.

Amendments and cancellations are best done with as much notice as possible to avoid unavailability or extra charges, you may want to cancel your appointment up to 24 hours prior to my visit.

British weather can be very hard on the trimming tools, especially during winter season. While many people face limitations in the boarding conditions, I really appreciate an effort to be made to provide dry environment for trimming. In the event of poor weather and no shelter, please expect to have your appointment rescheduled.

Payments to be made on the day of appointment. Late payments might result in termination of my services.

Hoof Handling

This session is designed for horses who find hoof care challenging — whether due to past trauma, misunderstanding, or a simple need for clearer communication. If you’ve been struggling to find a hoof care provider willing to work with your sensitive or reactive horse, this service is for you.

Each session lasts between one to two hours and offers a calm, empathetic approach that helps your horse feel safe and understood. You’ll be invited to join the process, learning valuable skills you can practice between visits to support your horse’s progress.

You’ll also receive practical tips and simple exercises tailored to your horse. These aren’t just for hoof handling — they often lead to improvements in your overall relationship, helping you build clearer, kinder communication in everyday life.

Some horses will respond quickly to these techniques; others may need dedicated training or gradual counter-conditioning to unlearn fear-based responses. Either way, we’ll work at your horse’s pace, with patience and consistency, in a relaxed and safe environment — for their benefit and yours.

Hoof handling is available to current trimming clients or can be booked as a standalone session.
